Embarking on a journey through the neighborhoods of Pomona, California, I can't help but reminisce about my upbringing in the very heart of the city. Growing up along East Franklin and Reservoir, the Franklin Terrace apartments, and experiencing the fun at the local skating rink and swap meets all contribute to fond memories from decades past. I attended Alcott, Simons, and Garey schools, and the allure of the Claremont Drive-in Theatre was a highlight of my youth. The '70s were marked by a cleaner, safer atmosphere than what I see today.

South Pomona: Birthplace and Childhood

South Pomona, where I was born and raised, is a special part of my history. I am particularly fond of Ganesh Park near the fairplex, which remains a treasured spot.

From South Pomona, it's a short walk to the Cal Poly Pomona campus, an important milestone in my life. While I have not resided in Pomona since 1962, my memories remain vivid.

Lincoln Park: A Haven of Comfort and Beauty

After a long hiatus, I ventured back to Pomona and found solace in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The charm of well-maintained Craftsman homes and lush gardens is undeniable. The residents are friendly and adhere to the rules, creating a sense of community and stability. It was a refreshing escape from the decay of neighborhoods like the north end, which I lovingly called Ghost Town. Back then, the area was plagued by crime, frequent gunshots, and graffiti. Despite these challenges, the Lincoln Park neighborhood stood out as an oasis of peace and tranquility.

The City's Transformation and Challenges

Over the past few years, Pomona has implemented significant changes. New homes and stores have been built, and the city is making an effort to improve. However, the efforts often feel too contained in one area, leading to an overload of traffic and noise pollution. The Lincoln Park area east of the city's core has seen mixed reviews. Some parts have retained their charm, while others have struggled with modernization. The Lincoln Park area, with its wild parrots and peacock, provides a unique charm not found elsewhere.

Ghost Town: A Place of Concern

Ghost Town, which encompasses the north end of Pomona, has always been a source of discomfort and concern. The constant crime, gunshots, and vandalism have left a painful memory in my heart. While the area is home to some awesome people, the trauma and fear associated with crime make it a less desirable place to reside.

My journey through Pomona's neighborhoods reveals a city with contrasting aspects. While some areas are indeed beautiful and welcoming, others are plagued by problems that restrict freedom and enjoyment. If seeking a place to call home, I would advise considering other cities with a better balance of beauty and safety.
