Anchorage Alaska: A Journey of Choice and Serendipity

Anchorage Alaska: A Journey of Choice and Serendipity

I grew up in Seward, Alaska, and my mother still lives there. The prospect of being close enough to visit anytime I like, without being too close, led me to choose Anchorage. There are numerous reasons why I chose to live in this unique and challenging part of the world.

The Biggest Deterrent: The Cold

Today, on November 10, 2024, the forecast for Anchorage shows a high of 34°F. Comparatively, my current hometown offers a much more pleasant experience. It's currently 72°F, sunny, and cloud-free, perfect for T-shirt shorts and sandals. The stark contrast in weather is not lost on me. Despite the frigid temperatures, the opportunity to be close to my family and the sense of adventure keeps me there.

Early Influences: Growing Up in Alaska

I was born in Anchorage and have always had a deep connection to this place, even if it means enduring harsh winters. The saying 'the devil you know is better than the one you don’t know' resonates with me. While it's not the most welcoming environment, Anchorage has a certain charm that draws me back each time I return.

The Journey Back

My first visit to Anchorage was in 1971 because my father was in the Air Force. The second time came in 1977 when I was paroled to my father, who was now a State Trooper. The last and final time I returned was in the late 1980s, after I completed my broadcasting school. This move was driven not only by a desire to provide a better environment for my child but also by the burgeoning gang culture in Los Angeles at the time.

A Passenger of Circumstances

Moving to Alaska since I was young was a dream turned into reality when I was 18. I embarked on this journey with my dog in an old pickup truck, oblivious to the vast distances involved. My first attempt ended miserably in Oregon, where I ran out of money. Life’s journey is a series of detours and challenges, and each twist brings its own lesson. After numerous moves and experiences, including marriage, children, and various life endeavors, I found myself single again. At 62, I made the decision to finally move to Alaska, driven by the belief that this was my destiny.

On my journey, I drove up the Alcan Highway to Anchorage with no job and only a small savings account. The early morning drive through the town led to a chance encounter with a 'help wanted' sign, which secured me a job and a place to stay. The reality of the situation was simple: I was there. And when you get there, you'll know why. This was a question of both need and desire, a place where life had a way of presenting the opportunities I sought.

Conclusion

Living in Alaska, particularly Anchorage, is a journey marked by choice and serendipity. Despite its challenges, the opportunity to be close to family and the sense of adventure keep me there. The cold, dangerous animals, and high cost of living are not deterrents for someone who finds comfort in the unique environment Alaska offers.

Why choose to live in Anchorage Alaska? Because it's there, you'll know when you get there.
