Arkansas: The Secret of Undiscovered Beauty and Growth

A Hidden Gem: Arkansas and the Secret of Relocation

Is there anyone out there who has ever intentionally moved to Arkansas? If you're looking for a place filled with natural beauty and rapid growth, you've come to the right article. Despite the humorous and even derogatory remarks, the state of Arkansas has quietly become a significant hub for relocation, particularly in Northwest Arkansas.

The Reality Check: Arkansas Is a Relocation Hotspot

Contrary to some sarcastic and anonymous questions, there are indeed many individuals who have made intentional moves to this state. Northwest Arkansas, in particular, is one of the fastest-growing urban areas in America. It's a region that has consistently been voted as one of the top five best places to live in the entire country. So, yes, many people have moved to Arkansas, and many more will continue to do so in the future.

My Relocation Story: From Berkeley to Conway

In 1996, I had a decision to make: either I would finish my graduate studies at UC-Berkeley or it would finish me. I began the quest for a job in my field, and the World Wide Web was already a significant part of my life. I clearly remember the early days of the internet, when every issue of Science and Nature contained classified ads for academic positions.

I applied for numerous jobs, one of which was at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA). The department was seeking an evolutionary biologist who could contribute to the overall goals of the department, including teaching general and introductory classes as well as more specialized electives. I eventually made it to the final round of interviews, and after a rigorous selection process over two days, I received a call offering me the position.

Conway, Arkansas, is a little over 36 hours away from Berkeley by car, and that journey remains indelibly etched in my memory. After accepting the job, I moved to a state that had a reputation for being a questionable choice for academics. However, growing up in Louisiana meant the South was familiar territory to me, warts and all. UCA stands not only for University of Central Arkansas but also for Under Construction Always, a play on words that adds to the charm of this evolving institution.

Challenges and Rewards of Living in Arkansas

Some of my fellow students looked at my decision with apprehension, suggesting that I was leaving the relative comfort of academic centers for an unknown, "Arkansan" environment. And while there are certainly quirky administrators and parts of town that need improvement, the rewards far outweigh the challenges.

UCA's unique blend of innovation and traditional values creates a vibrant campus culture. Regularly, my students and I participate in field trips, such as the geology trip to places like this:

These experiences, combined with the rapid growth and development of Northwest Arkansas, have made my relocation to Arkansas a meaningful and enriching experience.

Conclusion: The Future of Arkansas
