Discovering North Wales: A Remote Paradise with Welsh Charm

North Wales is one of the most enchanting regions of the United Kingdom, and it has become our home. Nestled in the remote and picturesque town of Llanfair Caerionion, close to Welshpool and Powys, this area has captivated us with its stunning landscapes and the opportunity to live a more tranquil lifestyle.

Why We Moved to North Wales

Our decision to move to North Wales was driven by the desire for a change in lifestyle and to ensure our mother would remain independent at home.

Instead of the hustle and bustle of city life, we opted for a more serene environment in this part of Wales. The proximity to our mother's care needs, combined with the potential for more budget-friendly living, made North Wales an ideal choice. We now reside in Llanfair Caerionion, situated close to Welshpool and Powys, in an area that offers breathtaking views of open meadows and rolling hills. Our days often begin with a beautiful vista from our Juliette balcony, overlooking vast fields.

Our Renovations

One of our most cherished possessions is a listed chapel, which we renovated to suit our needs. This included the installation of wet rooms, a feature that our mother, who had previously struggled with using baths, greatly appreciated. We also transformed the kitchen to create a beautiful space that our mother could enjoy. Additionally, we completed several other renovations, including new roofs, mezzanine floors, vestry windows, a gravel driveway, chimney liners, and wood burners.

The final touches we are working on include an enclosed oak porch, which will provide easy access for our mother and ensure the house remains spacious and welcoming.

Support and Community

Living in North Wales has not only been about the beauty of the surroundings but also about the tight-knit community. Despite our decision to live off-grid and in an isolated area, we are fortunate to have a support group of fellow off-grid and isolated residents in the area. They offer valuable assistance and camaraderie, making our life here even more fulfilling.

A Family Affair

Our chosen way of life here is further enriched by the presence of our son, our partner, and our mother. We are also fortunate to have a very close relationship with our mother-in-law and brother-in-law, who live a two-hour drive away. We value the time we spend together and celebrate our close bond.

The Welsh Language

While many in North Wales speak English, a significant number also speak Welsh. We cherish the inclusion of Welsh in our daily life, as it adds a unique layer of culture and tradition to our surroundings. The ability to speak both languages has become part of our everyday experience, making the area feel even more vibrant and diverse.

For those interested in experiencing North Wales for themselves, we have recently published a video on our YouTube channel, 'Postcard And A Pint', showcasing some of the stunning locations in the region. You can find it easily by searching 'Postcard And A Pint North Wales' on YouTube.

We highly recommend North Wales for anyone seeking a change of scenery, a better quality of life, or simply a place where nature and community come together to create a unique and enriching experience.
