Discovering the Best Places for Leisurely Bike Rides in Washington DC

Login to the scenic and peaceful world of Washington DC, where leisurely bike rides can be both a workout and a scenic getaway. The city offers a variety of bike trails, but some are more enjoyable and lengthy than others. Here, we explore the best bike rides in Washington DC, from the hidden gems of the Potomac River to the historic trails of Rock Creek Park.

Chesapeake and Ohio (CO) Canal Trail

My favorite bike trail in the DC area is the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (CO) Trail. This 184-mile trail stretches from Georgetown to Havre de Grace, Maryland, and is renowned for its easy uphill grade and historic character. It's the perfect getaway for both weekend adventures and everyday cycling.

The CO Canal Trail offers several parking lots along the route, making it convenient for you to break your journey and explore the surrounding areas. However, due to the limited number of roadside drinking water sources, it's essential to carry enough water for your ride. Additionally, there are several rest areas along the trail, which are great places to have a snack or a break.

Traversing Along the Potomac River Shoreline and Rock Creek Park

Another delightful bike route begins at Stanton Park or your house, starting your journey along Maryland Ave to the Capitol grounds. Here, you can ride in front of the Capitol and down the south side drive to Garfield Circle and the Capitol Reflecting Pool. Continue down the south side of the National Mall, stopping at the Carousel to watch the kids whilst taking in the view. Make sure to visit the iconic Washington Monument, and when repairs are completed, circle around the monument, leading to the WWII Memorial.

Continue your route through Constitution Gardens, past the Vietnam Memorial, and atop the Lincoln Memorial for epic views. From there, head down Park Dr. NW and take a break watching volleyball games at the courts. Bike along the Potomac behind the Kennedy Center to the Washington Harbor Complex. Dismount here and explore Georgetown Waterfront Park, and if you're feeling adventurous, continue to the old rail-trail to Bethesda and beyond or the CO Canal towpath.

To retrace your steps, circle the Washington Monument Reflecting Pool, circle the monument, and ride up the north side of the Mall to return to the Capitol or Stanton Park.

Rock Creek Parkway and Beach Drive

For a more relaxed and picturesque ride, consider the Rock Creek Parkway and Beach Drive. On Sundays during the summer, they temporarily shut down Beach Drive to vehicle traffic, making it a more serene ride. This route is perfect for a leisurely Sunday morning.

Another easy and scenic option is the CO Canal Trail, which runs from Georgetown up to Great Falls on the Maryland side. This trail is almost flat, and it drops you off at the Great Falls State Park, a breathtaking location that features waterfalls and dense forests.

Tips for a Successful Ride:

Bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are limited water sources along the routes. Avoid busy business districts during the workweek for a more peaceful experience. Check the weather and trail conditions before heading out. Wear appropriate gear and shoes for riding.

Embark on these routes to discover the beauty and charm of DC, and create unforgettable memories on your bike. Happy cycling!
