Discovering the Unique Charm of Meghalaya: A Woman's Perspective
Meghalaya, the ldquo;abode of cloudsrdquo; as it is known, is a gem nestled in the northeastern region of India. Despite my extensive travels and living outside the state for half my life, it remains my heartrsquo;s home. Drawing from my personal experience, I will explore why Meghalaya stands apart and why I love it so deeply.
Meghalaya: A Culture of Equality and Natural Beauty
Meghalaya, one of the Seven Sister States, showcases a unique blend of culture, history, and natural charm. Unlike many other states, Meghalaya is characterized by its matrilineal society, where women are highly respected and valued. This is evident in many aspects of daily life, such as equal rights and responsibilities for women and men, and the sharing of household chores and cooking without discrimination.
As a native Khasi, I grew up in the serene Khasi Hills of Shillong. The influence of the ever-present clouds and the constant rainfall is a defining feature of the state. Mawsynram, for instance, holds the Guinness World Record for the highest annual rainfall, while Cherrapunjee has been the recipient of the most rainfall in a single year and month.
Natural Marvels and Scenic Beauty
The natural beauty of Meghalaya is beyond compare. The state is home to the Living Root Bridge, a wonder of nature created by the Khasi Jaintia people. The Dawki Lake, a shared lake between India and Bangladesh, adds a unique charm to the region. Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, further exemplifies the statersquo;s commitment to cleanliness and environmental preservation.

From the air quality to the lifestyle, Meghalaya stands out. The statersquo;s air is among the cleanest in India, a stark contrast to the pollution levels in many other major cities in the country. This purity of air is a hallmark of Meghalaya and is often highlighted by both domestic and foreign tourists.
The natural beauty of Meghalaya is matched by its scenic allure. Visitors often refer to the state as the ldquo;Scotland of the Eastrdquo;, a nod to its breathtaking landscapes and weather conditions. The hills, rivers, and valleys provide a picturesque setting that is inviting and refreshing.
Respect for Women and Cultural Heritage
Women in Meghalaya are deeply respected and valued. Unlike many other parts of India, there is a considerable absence of corrupt or theft-prone environments. This respect for women is a key factor in my personal love for the state. From childhood, I was taught to be self-sufficient and to contribute equally to household duties.
In addition to its natural beauty, Meghalaya also boasts a unique cultural heritage. The matrilineal society, where property and inheritance are passed down through the female line, is a strong testament to the regionrsquo;s distinct identity.
Personal Favorite Spots and Experiences
While exploring the state, I have a particular fondness for the hills and the people of the hills. Winter, with its gentle coldness, is my favorite season. My personal favorite restaurant in Meghalaya is Orange Roots, nestled on the road to Cherrapunjee. It offers a perfect fusion of location and cuisine, with its location and quality of food being a delight.
Overall, Meghalayarsquo;s blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and equitable treatment of women makes it a truly unique state. It is a place that offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life and a glimpse into a harmonious society.
