Exploring Vietnam: A Country of People, Natural Riches, and Cultural Beauty

Vietnam is indeed a country that captures your heart with its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and people. From Hanoi to Da Nang, it is a land full of wonder and charm. I had the privilege of visiting Vietnam during the war in 1969 and returned in 1988 to teach English. Since then, the country has undergone tremendous changes, much of which is attributed to the resilience and hardworking nature of its people. Today, Vietnam is a shining example of economic recovery and development.

Traits of the Vietnamese People

The most outstanding feature of Vietnam is its people. Despite the challenges inherited from the war, economic and other sanctions, the Vietnamese people have managed to lift themselves out of poverty. Many countries recognized the potential of Vietnam and lifted the embargo, allowing the country to focus on economic recovery. Vietnam's natural resources and hard-working population are crucial factors in its rapid development. The future of Vietnam is indeed bright, and the country will surely overcome all obstacles, including American sanctions and embargoes.

Personal Revelations

After my service in the US Navy, I returned to Vietnam to work on the paperwork needed for my Vietnamese wife to leave the country. Due to the fall of Saigon, it became impossible to continue with the paperwork, and my wife and our two daughters were part of the evacuation. After the war, our first visit to Vietnam was in 1995, and it was an emotional journey. As I approached retirement, the idea of a peaceful life in Vietnam emerged. We decided that Vietnam would be an ideal place to retire, given the language and family ties. We finally moved there five years ago, embracing the vibrant culture and people of the land.

Today, I live in Vietnam and can proudly say that I have enough income to retire almost anywhere. However, I chose Vietnam for its cultural richness, friendly people, and the sense of belonging that comes with living in a place with such a deep connection to my wife's homeland. My retirement in Vietnam is not just comfortable but also enriching. The country continues to grow and change, but there is a sense of stability and peace that makes it a perfect place to call home.
