Exploring the Benefits of a Khalistan for Sikhs

For many who follow the political discourse surrounding the potential Khalistan state, discussions often revolve around safety, economic benefits, and religious recognition. Less explored are other potential advantages that Sikhs might gain by achieving the sovereignty they seek. As someone from India, I would like to shed light on some lesser-known benefits.

Unfounded Fears and Misconceptions

It should be acknowledged that not all Sikhs advocate for a Khalistan. In fact, many who speak about the benefits of Khalistan are either living abroad or have been influenced by external forces. Some are state-sponsored individuals who are merely puppets used to sow division. This is a harsh reality, but it also underscores the importance of understanding the true sentiments of the Sikh community.

The media often labels Sikhs as Khalistan supporters, but this label is misleading. The majority of Sikhs wish to live in harmony with their fellow Indians and do not support Khalistan. The division created by those with hidden agendas serves to detract from the genuine aspirations of the people.

Unique Immigration Benefits

A significant benefit of a Khalistan that has not been widely discussed is the advantage it would offer in the realm of immigration. Many Punjabi Sikhs living outside India have had their lives endangered due to disputes and conflicts, and they often seek asylum in foreign countries.

One overlooked fact is the immigration rules of the United States and other developed nations. The validity of a green card is tied to the country of birth, not citizenship. If Khalistan were to become a reality, it would mean that new citizens of Khalistan would have a much simpler path to obtaining a green card, bypassing lengthy backlogs that currently exist in many countries.

This is an important point for Sikhs living in the diaspora, as well as for those who might seek to emigrate in the future. Even though this does not represent the primary reasons for aspiring to Khalistan, it is a compelling incentive for those evaluating the potential benefits.

Economic and Strategic Value

Another overlooked benefit is the potential economic and strategic gains that a Khalistan could bring. Other landlocked countries in Europe, such as Liechtenstein and Andorra, are successful despite their small size. Similarly, a Khalistan would be in a strategic position to leverage its unique geography and cultural heritage.

The control over the water resources of Punjab, a region known for its fertile land, would become a valuable asset. This could improve the economic prospects for all communities in Punjab, not just Sikhs. Moreover, Khalistan could have better relations with Pakistan, which would lead to mutual benefits and potentially reduce regional tensions.

The establishment of Khalistan would also mean that Sikhs would be free from the perceived genocidal actions of the Indian state. This has historically caused much distress and has been a significant factor in the desire for a separate state.

Focusing on Identity and Values

While the benefits discussed above are tangible and important, the debate about Khalistan is also deeply rooted in concepts of identity and cultural preservation. Similar to how Jews sought and achieved the state of Israel, Sikhs aspire to have a state that can serve as a base for spreading Sikhism and protecting the cultural and religious interests of the Sikh community.

The desire for Khalistan is less about material gains and more about the right to self-determination and the preservation of Sikh cultural identity. As the world continues to grapple with issues of sovereignty and autonomy, the aspirations of the Sikh community are worth considering from a broader perspective.
