Exploring the Canadian Prairies: An Oasis in a Sea of Grass
Living on the Canadian prairies can be a unique and often polarizing experience, as it was for me. Raised in the vast expanses of the prairies, I've moved all over the world, including various locations in Canada, and have visited over 100 countries. Each place has its own charm, but the prairies hold a special place in my heart, shaped by my upbringing and the stories of the land.
From Calgary to the True Prairie
Initially, I moved to Calgary, which is still part of the prairie region but situated closer to the edges. Unlike my upbringing, Calgary offered more natural greenery with two rivers and several creeks flowing through the city. The presence of trees, especially at my grandmother's house with her lush garden and surrounding trees, made a significant impression on me. Such an environment felt like an oasis compared to the endless grasslands of my birthplace.
Adapting to the Prairie Life
For most of my life, there were no trees on my ten-acre property. In the early days, we attempted to plant trees, but they all perished. Countless years later, a natural tree appeared on our land, growing to almost 20 feet tall by the time we decided to sell. While not yet suitable for climbing, its growth represented a glimmer of hope and natural wonder in a landscape dominated by prairie grasses.
The Appeal of Snowmobiling and Community
Snowmobiling became a significant part of my life as I aged. The prairies, with their extensive open spaces, were the perfect terrain for this activity. Snowdrifts covered the few fences, and you could explore the coulees and creeks, creating new adventures and horizons. This experience deepened my appreciation for the prairies, revealing aspects that sometimes go unnoticed.
The Nuances of Prairie Living
Living on the prairies offered a sense of community that was both comforting and challenging. I knew almost everyone within a 20-kilometer radius, and the social fabric was strong. Yet, the harsh realities of the wind and lack of trees made it difficult to enjoy outdoor activities or find a sense of shelter. However, living in a town provided a stark contrast, offering green spaces and lush surroundings that could transform the experience.
A Retreat to the Prairie-Edge Oasis
When it came time to retire, I had many choices: Mexico, Hawaii, Vancouver, or Calgary. Ultimately, I chose a location on a river where the forest meets the prairies, creating a personal oasis of greenery while maintaining close ties to the prairie community. This decision allowed me to experience the best of both worlds.

As I reflect, the prairies remain a complex tapestry of memories and experiences. They are a place of truth, stark beauty, and enduring stories that continually evolve with the changing seasons and people's lives.
