From Zoology to Dentistry: A Career Path and Transformation
My journey from zoology to becoming a practicing dentist was both challenging and rewarding. Along the way, I navigated a variety of roles and experiences that eventually led me to the field of dentistry. This article details my educational and career path, emphasizing the unique journey that brought me to this professional field.
Educational Journey
My academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology at Michigan State University. During my time there, I studied biology, zoology, and the broader aspects of natural sciences. Zoology provided me with a strong foundation in the biology of animals and their habitats, which was quite valuable for my subsequent careers as a Naval Aviation Officer and a Financial Analyst.
Later, I pursued a more specialized role in the Navy, becoming a Naval Aviation Officer. I completed my training at Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, serving as a Naval Fight Officer in various aircraft such as the RA-5C Vigilante, A-3B Sky Warrior, and TA-4 Skyhawk. These experiences afforded me a unique perspective on military operations and leadership.
Interestingly, after my Navy service, I continued my educational journey with an MBA from the University of Kansas. This additional degree expanded my skills in financial analysis, which I applied as a Financial Analyst at Citicorp, where I analyzed financial data and advised on strategic financial decisions.
Transition into Dentistry
The transition from a financial analyst to a dentist was a significant career shift. To pursue dentistry, I had to go through a rigorous application process to dental schools. I first applied to and got accepted into the University of Missouri School of Dentistry, where I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.
Satisfying the requirements for dental school was just the beginning. I furthered my education by obtaining a Certificate in Periodontics from the same institution, which specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth's soft tissues and supporting structures of the teeth.
In pursuit of my dream, I took on various roles to finance and establish my dental practice. I bought equipment, rented an office, and hired an assistant. Praying for new patients became an integral part of my routine, as I started my dental practice, working 4 days a week and serving 2 days a week as a Hospital Dentist.
The Road Less Traveled
In the United States, dental training typically requires a Bachelor's degree followed by a 4-year graduate program in dental school. For those without access to an existing practice, the cost of setting up a new dental practice can be substantial. My experience echoed this reality, as the financial aspects and practical challenges of starting a business were central to my journey.
