Habib University: Evaluating the Social Science Offerings
Habib University is renowned for its strong foundation in social sciences. Its interdisciplinary approach to education aims to shape critically conscious and determined graduates capable of positively impacting society.
Faculty of Social Sciences vs Faculty of Arts
Whether one prefers to pursue a degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences or Faculty of Arts largely depends on the subject combination. The Faculty of Social Sciences is notably better for Bachelor of Arts (BA) honours courses due to its diverse and interest-oriented subject combinations, which include options like Communications, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, and more.
The Faculty of Arts, on the other hand, provides extensive language courses in languages such as Spanish, French, German, English, Hindi, and other regional languages. However, for students aiming for civil services examinations (UPSC CSE), the preference leans towards pure disciplines.
Syllabus and Teaching Methods
The syllabus in the Faculty of Social Sciences often follows an older framework, with many courses rooted in traditional methodologies. Professors primarily adopt conventional teaching methods such as simple lectures, with minimal use of technology and a lighter emphasis on field work including investigatory projects, surveys, and skill-based assessments.
Interestingly, there are no academic tours at the undergraduate level in the Faculty of Social Sciences, except for some field surveys in Ancient Indian History and Archaeology, and Travel and Tourism Management. This rigid approach can make the three-year UG experience somewhat monotonous.
MA Courses and Placement Opportunities
Master of Social Work (MSW) and Rural Development courses within the Faculty offer placement opportunities, but the teaching methods and syllabuses are not always aligned with current societal needs.
For students planning to appear for competitive exams or specifically aiming for UPSC CSE, the Faculty of Social Sciences can be a viable option. The syllabus optimally matches the UPSC CSE Optional subjects, providing sufficient time for preparation.
Co-Curricular Activities and Resources
While the classroom experience may be less engaging, the Faculty of Social Sciences offers a wealth of co-curricular activities and resources that can enrich the student experience. Regular seminars, symposiums, and rich resources in the library provide valuable opportunities for intellectual growth and engagement.
Various co-curricular societies like the Quiz Club, Debating Club, Dance Club, Fine Arts, Poetry, and Music Club exist, catering to diverse student interests.
