Impressions of Thailand: History, Culture, and People
While my travels have taken me to various interesting places, my memories of a single encounter with a person in Thailand are memorable, primarily because of his unique sense of humor. If you ask me where I live, I would say I currently reside in Australia, a country known for its vast landscapes and diverse cultures. My love for exploration led me to visit Japan in 2012, and since then, I’ve made the beautiful and welcoming land my home, stay and the heart of my affection.
Thailand: A Country of Beauty and Kindness
Of all the places I have had the privilege to visit, Thailand stood out as a remarkable blend of natural beauty and rich culture. It was a country where, despite the occasional challenge, the smiles and kindness of the Thai people left a lasting impression. The warmth and hospitality of the locals underscored the true essence of the country, making it a place I fondly remember and a destination that lingers in my travel wish list.
Experiences That Shaped My Views
My journey has been an adventurous one, having lived in or visited several countries around the world. I spent my early years in a sleepy rural city in Australia, a place of historical significance. However, my travels have also taken me to Australia, the USA, the Czech Republic, Russia, and Germany. I’ve traversed the Western side of Japan in the cities, a feat I have accomplished four distinct times. Moreover, my overseas adventures have spanned across 70 countries, with an impressive 400 international trips in my travel log.
Understanding the Thai Mindset: Old-School and Naive
One of the essential impressions I have gathered about the Thai people is their old-school and naive approach to life. This is not something that can be simply dismissed; rather, it’s a deeply ingrained cultural characteristic that influences various facets of Thai society, from education to business practices.
Historically, Thailand has borrowed a lot from Western civilization but retains an essential understanding rooted in fundamental principles, often by way of "copying" models. This approach is evident even in the early Meiji Era, when Japan, a culturally similar nation, was already producing Nobel Prize nominees. During World War II, the Japanese continued this trait, earning significant recognition in natural sciences through various Nobel Prizes.
In modern times, this old-school mentality manifests in the Japanese pursuit of "back to basics" in everyday life. From major businesses to amateur sports, many Japanese believe that this steadfast adherence to fundamental principles will ultimately lead to success. It is a pragmatic yet somewhat naive form of thinking that reflects a conservative and traditional value system.
Conclusion: A Global Explorer’s Reflections
Reflecting on my journey through life and travel, it is clear that each experience has contributed to my unique perspective of the world. My travels have enriched me with diverse cultural experiences and deepened my understanding of the Thai people, who, despite their simplicity and old-school mindset, bring joy and a sense of authenticity to every interaction. Whether I am in my home in Australia or traveling to the far corners of the globe, the memories of Thailand and its people remain a cherished part of my travels.
