A Phoenix Icon: McMahons Steakhouse

For many years, Phoenix AZ was home to a beloved establishment called McMahons. This upscale Steakhouse was more than just a diner; it was a beloved landmark known for its exceptional cuisine and warm ambiance. Bob, the owner, was renowned for his friendly and charismatic personality, and the service at his restaurant was nothing short of outstanding.

McMahons offered more than just great food and service. The restaurant had a large outdoor patio where patrons could enjoy smoking cigars and sipping on delicious happy hour specials. Bob took pride in his establishment and often went out of his way to make his patrons feel special. He welcomed regular customers like myself with open arms and even treated us to cigars or drinks on occasion. He had a knack for engaging with patrons, sharing stories, and making everyone feel comfortable.

One of the reasons why McMahons was my favorite restaurant in Tucson was its unique atmosphere and the exceptional experience it offered. Sadly, McMahons faced the difficult decision to close its doors. This news sent waves of disappointment through the community. Bob, the owner, was a one-of-a-kind individual who went above and beyond to make his restaurant a beacon of warmth and hospitality. The closure left a void that is hard to fill.

Bob, if you're out there, thank you for the memories. You were truly irreplaceable. I miss your restaurant and wish you the best.

The Gone Trees and Ditch System of Phoenix AZ

However, the city underwent significant changes starting in the late sixties. Major cross streets were widened from one lane each way to the expansive roadways we see today. These changes, while intended to improve traffic flow, came at a cost. Many of the trees that once adorned our roads were removed, leaving the streets open and sunlit without the cooling embrace of shade.

The ditches, once a symbol of the city's history and a natural buffer, were also affected. They no longer flowed consistently, and their presence was much less noticeable. The transformation of these features left a void that newcomers and long-time residents alike miss. The loss of these natural elements has altered the character of the city, making it feel less like a place rooted in its history and more like a modern urban landscape.

Phoenix is undoubtedly a city in constant evolution. While changes bring progress, the loss of certain elements can evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing. The trees and the ditch system, once vital parts of the city's charm, are now a cherished memory that many Phoenix residents miss deeply.

Phoenix AZ has indeed seen many changes, both good and bad. While we look forward to what the future brings, the past leaves a lasting impression on the hearts of many who lived through it. It's a reminder that every city, no matter how much it changes, has a unique history that shapes its identity.
