The Divided States: Observations from a Former Resident

When someone says, 'When someone says,' it often signals that there is disarray or at least confusion. This is how it feels to me regarding the current state of a nation that once seemed so stable and welcoming, but now appears deeply divided and concerning. I earnestly hope that this nation can get itself back together soon.

Concern and Reflections

Living outside the United States, I have had the privilege of interacting with a multitude of Americans over the years. Despite the occasional cultural differences and political debates, I can honestly say that I liked every American I met. However, there is a collective anxiety and unease that comes from observing the current political and social landscape. Many of the policies and attitudes displayed by the United States today are deeply troubling and concerning.

The Election of Donald Trump and Its Aftermath

One of the most alarming aspects of the current political situation is the election of Donald Trump as President. His candidacy and presidency were marked by a series of controversial statements and actions that were far from the values of democratic governance. Some of the most notable issues include:

Ethics and Honesty: As a serial bankrupt, misogynist, and tax fraud, Trump's fitness for public office was questionable, yet he managed to run a successful campaign. His history of unethical behavior, including exploiting personal relationships, has raised significant concerns. Social and Political Ideology: His policies and rhetoric have fueled a narrative that any form of social welfare akin to a universal healthcare system is akin to communism. This fearmongering has led to the acceptance of policies that undermine the safety net for the most vulnerable members of society. Gun Rights and Civil Liberties: The acceptance of open-carry gun policies in public places is another troubling sign that the values of civilization are being compromised. The ease with which guns are accessible has led to an increase in gun-related violence and mass shootings in the country. Racism and Discrimination: The treatment of Black and Hispanic communities has been a source of intense criticism. The police brutality that has been witnessed in recent years, and the acquittal of officers involved, has led to widespread fear and distrust among these communities. The voiced rhetoric of certain politicians has fueled further resentment and division.

Domestic Issues and Future Concerns

The implications of these policies extend far beyond just the current administration. Here in the UK, we too have faced our fair share of challenges, such as the unexpected appointment of a Prime Minister who is prone to misleading statements. However, this individual has also overseen the sale of parts of the National Health Service to profit-driven US companies. This move, coupled with the rhetoric of racism and divisiveness, is deeply concerning.

The United States faces a multitude of issues that contribute to a divided society:

Supremacy and Division: Many argue that the rhetoric promoting superiority and division is detrimental to the fabric of a united society. The active promotion of anti-immigrant and xenophobic sentiments has a chilling effect on inclusivity and diversity. Healthcare Crises: The health-care system in the US is often criticized for being overpriced and lacking in comprehensive coverage. Despite being considered one of the most developed countries in the world, the US ranks poorly in terms of healthcare outcomes and access. Political Polarization: The re-election of a candidate who espouses dictator-like behavior and authoritarian tendencies is a significant setback for democracy. This has led to a crisis of faith in the electoral process and raised concerns about the future of civil liberties and human rights. Overpopulation of Homeless: The high rates of homelessness and incarceration are indicators of broader systemic issues within the society. These problems highlight the lack of support and resources for those in need. Work and Labor: The relentless pace of work in the US has led to a culture where individuals are expected to work until the end of their lives, with little to no vacation time or paternity leave. This has serious implications for both personal well-being and societal stability. Gun Control: The highest rates of gun violence in the civilized world are a stark reality, with the US leading in mass shootings and related deaths. This issue has profound implications for public safety and mental health. Religious Extremism: The presence of right-wing evangelicals and their influence on political discourse is deeply troubling. This has led to a polarized society where differences in opinion are not simply respected but actively combated.

Beyond the Border

My journey as a former resident of the United States has been one of reflection and re-evaluation. The concerns and observations I have shared are not just reflections on one nation, but they highlight broader issues that affect society as a whole. The state we are in today is not just a national issue but a global one.

It is my sincere hope that we, as a global community, can work together to address these challenges and strive towards a more just and equitable society. The world needs the United States to lead by example in promoting democratic values, social justice, and human rights. The disarray and confusion that characterize the current political climate are controllable if we choose to address them with thoughtful and informed action.
