Three Unforgettable Railway Experiences That Changed My Travel Habits
Traveling by train can be a thrilling experience. However, sometimes it can turn into a memorable (and at times, embarrassing) story. I’ll share three such experiences that have shaped my travel habits.
Experience 1: The Mumbai Train Embarrassment
One time, while traveling on the Mumbai local train, I committed a rookie mistake. My forgetfulness got the better of me, and I hadn't purchased a ticket before boarding the train. Little did I know that a ticket checker would catch me during the journey and demand to see my ticket.
Being caught without a valid ticket led to a fine levied by the checker. The situation was even more embarrassing due to the crowded train, and many other passengers were witness to my error. I felt ashamed and wished I had been more careful. From that day on, I made it a point to always purchase a ticket before boarding any train to avoid such a situation.
Experience 2: The Random Stranger's Intrusion
Another unforgettable incident occurred when I was simply wandering through the platform, 30 minutes before the train arrived. I had already purchased a ticket and was at the end of the platform when a man approached me and showed his Adhar card. He then murmured something and pointed towards the wall. Intrigued and slightly uncomfortable, I paid no mind to his actions.
Before I could react, he rushed towards me, slammed my back, and I was caught off guard. Although there were other passengers around, they did not bother to intervene. I ran to the office of the station master, informed the authorities, and then boarded the train moments before it left. Thankfully, the criminal was apprehended and dealt with accordingly.
Experience 3: The New Year Toothbrush Miss
My most recent embarrassment was during a school trip in 2020. On a train going on a school trip, I couldn't locate my toothbrush. I spent a few minutes searching for it but to no avail. An aunt who was on the train kindly suggested that I simply gargle instead of brushing, which was more than I could ask for in such a situation.
Despite it not being a huge embarrassment, my compartment mates knew that I had not brushed my teeth. Looking back now, it’s more of a humorous memory. While it was not a joyful moment, having this experience added an interesting twist to my travel story.
These memorable experiences teach us that while traveling by train can be exciting, it's also essential to be prepared and mindful of our surroundings. They have certainly influenced my travel habits and made me more cautious.
